The Suffolk Association of Architects (SAA) commissioned Serena to design and make some three dimensional Awards to be given every year to winners of various architectural awards in Suffolk. They specifically wanted something handmade that refected the close working relationship between artists and architects.

Serena started by working out several designs in clay and experimenting with how to use the clay to create space and balance that architects themselves have to work with.

Her final chosen design was a figurehead looking up. This figurehead, which appeared solid, was actually placed on top of a hollow cube.

Serena says 'It is always a challenge to work with clay, and in particular a piece that is heavy on top of a hollow cube. I have to get the balance just right or it all caves in! I worked out a way of supporting the heavy clay figure by putting supports inside the cube, but this has to be taken out at the right time or the clay will shrink and crack against the supports."

The figures go through two separate firings and then glazed with colourful glazes that reflect Serena's style..
